14 FIELDGATE STREET, LONDON E1
Axis were appointed by Mace in 2010 to undertake detailed design and working drawings for 14 Fieldgate Street, for the developer Chancerygate. Situated in the heart of Whitechapel, the scheme comprises 350 student residential units, a large retail unit at ground floor and nine private residential dwellings. Project leader Ben introduced minor amendments to enhance the façades, introducing a blue brick and a shimmering aluminium mesh screen to conceal courtyards behind. Internally, a contemporary and vibrant foyer space is subdivided to offer unique social spaces for students. The project is one of the largest constructed in the UK using a lightweight steel frame structure. Prefabricated lightweight steel frame bathroom pods form an integral part of the overall structure, allowing for a rapid and efficient construction process.
